Dr. David Puts

Dr. David Puts

David is a Professor of Anthropology and Co-Director of the Center for Human Evolution and Diversity at Penn State. He is Co-Editor of the journal Evolutionary Psychology, Editor of Evolution and Human Behavior, and Associate Editor of the journals Adaptive Human Behavior and Physiology and Archives of Sexual Behavior. He received his bachelor’s degree in anthropology with a minor in mathematics from Kenyon College, Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh, and postdoctoral training in neuroscience at Michigan State University. David is interested in how sex hormones affect our psychological and behavioral development, and why we evolved these developmental patterns. Outside of the lab, David is generally still thinking and talking about research. But when he’s not doing this, he likes outdoor activities, sports, games, good food, and especially being around friends and family.

Graduate Students

Sojung Baek

Sojung Baek

Sojung is a 3rd-year Doctoral student, interested in looking at human empathy by drawing perspectives from Behavioral Endocrinology, Human Behavioral Ecology, and Social Psychology. You can find her in wet lab processing samples for hormonal assays during semesters and in Bangladesh, interviewing women on their empathic expression and support network during summer/winter breaks. She has a cat named Posie Alexandra Sookie (숙희) and you can see the lovely short-legged creature in 421 Carpenter if you are lucky.

I am Saeed Koohgard. I will be starting my PhD program in 2024 and I hope to finish in 2029.
Sexual selection, sexual strategies, mate preferences, motivation, and self-esteem are some of the core areas of evolutionary psychology and anthropology that I study. And also reading, watching movies, and painting occupy my leisure time.

Albi is a 5th year Biological Anthropology Student. She will be attending Rutgers School of Health Professions in Fall 2024 for a MS degree in Academic Clinical Research Management. After completing her MS degree, she hopes to pursue an MD/PhD in Microbiology where she will specialize in Gynecology.

Her interests are in microbiomes, and she hopes to further research on microbiomes of female reproductive organs and the relationship of microbiomes to diseases such as; endometriosis, endometritis, ovarian cancer, and endometrial cancer. She also hopes to explore the microbiome relationship with fertility.

Rachel is a fourth-year student majoring in Psychology B.S. and minoring in Anthropology. Her main research interests include analyzing empathy and morality from a socio-cognitive and evolutionary perspective. After she finishes her bachelor’s degree, she would like to attend graduate school for psychology in pursuit of a career in research and teaching. She is also a Research Assistant for the Empathy and Moral Psychology Lab in the psychology department. In her free time, she acts as the THON Chair for Psi Chi – The International Honor Society in Psychology, and juggles clubs and balls anywhere outdoors on campus.

Jayden is a 4rth-year undergraduate student studying neuropsychology at Penn State. They joined the lab because of their interest in current areas of research and the  psychological aspects of it. After graduation, they plan to attend graduate school and research the neurological and biological affects of chronic stress. Outside of the lab, you will find them on the Penn State Dressage Team or in a comfy chair reading a book.

Amber is a 4th year Anthropological Science student focusing on Biological Anthropology. She is interested in the evolution of human psychology, anatomy, and behavior, especially in the context of sexuality. After graduating, she plans on pursuing a Ph.D. in anthropology, clinical research, or another similar discipline. Outside of school, she enjoys playing video games, drawing, going to the gym, and spending time with friends and family.

Research Assistant

Courtney is a military veteran/mother of four, turned student once again. She is working hard to finish her second undergraduate, this time in Anthropology, which was always her secret passion. She comes to the lab with plenty of experience behind the camera and keyboard, as she spent the last 10 years honing her craft as a Portrait and Newborn Photographer. She hopes to bring that level of passion to PSU and achieve her dream of being an Anthropologist.

Reagan Dixon

Research Assistant

Reagen Dixon is currently a fourth-year undergraduate student studying forensic biology and biological anthropology. She is interested in all things microbiology and genetics and plans to continue her education in the field of genomics and hopefully complete a Ph.D. Outside of the lab, she is a founding member of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and a member of the Forensic Student’s Social Hour Club. In her free time, she loves being at the library with her friends, or binge-watching Netflix shows, and baking with her girlfriend.

Grace Hart

Research Assistant

Grace is a fourth-year psychology major, expected graduation December 2024. She is interested in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, primatology and paleoanthropology at large. Outside of BEEL you’ll find her exploring local wildlife trails, working in her sketchbook or playing music with friends.

Patrick is graduating next year and majoring in Psychology with a minor in Anthropology. His research interest is truly any form of human behavior and the evolutionary basis behind it. After graduating and eventually attaining a Doctorate Degree, Patrick hopes to be able to participate contribute research within the evolutionary psychology field. His hobbies are playing video games, drawing, making people laugh, and playing soccer.

Sabrina Cross is a rising junior at Pennsylvania State University. Originally she is from Westchester, New York and is pursuing a BS in Psychology with the Neuroscience option. After college, she hopes to continue to medical school and become an orthopedic surgeon. In her free time, Sabrina likes to spend time with friends and family outdoors or traveling, as well as advocating for students with disabilities and mental health issues.

Stefanie Rose is a current junior at Pennsylvania State University. She resides in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and is currently pursuing a BA in English on the Pre-medicine track with a minor in Biology. After completing her undergraduate studies, she hopes to continue to medical school to become a surgical oncologist. In her free time, Stefanie enjoys spending time with friends and attending sports events with her family.  Additionally, she devotes time to volunteering in her community with all age groups.

Veronica is a fourth-year student from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, studying Anthropological Science and Geosciences. She joined the lab because of her interest in biological anthropology and genetics. In addition to this lab. She is also a member of the Functional and Evolutionary Morphology Lab, where she examines the asymmetry of calcanei and femur of a precontact Native American population. After graduation, she will be participating in a Museum Studies Field School in Turin and will be attending graduate school afterward to obtain a degree in Museum Studies. In her free time, she enjoys weightlifting, playing video games, and binge-watching Netflix series.

Seth is interested in Evolutionary Psychology and Biological Anthropology. After completing his BS, he is hoping to apply to a graduate program in his field and potentially pursue a PhD.
